Protect Your
Rainwater System

Regular maintenance is essential to keep your rainwater harvesting system operating efficiently, maintain water quality, and maximise the lifespan of your tank, pump and associated equipment.
Without routine servicing:

  • Sludge (sediment) can build up.
  • Filters can become blocked.
  • Water quality may deteriorate.
  • Pumps can suffer premature wear.
  • Automatic changeover devices may fail when needed.

A well-maintained system delivers reliable performance and helps avoid costly repairs or unexpected breakdowns.

Recommended Maintenance Checklist

Monthly/As Required

  • Inspect and clean roof gutters.

  • Clean the first-flush diverter.

  • Check and clean tank inlet and mosquito screens.

  • Inspect the tank lid, overflow, and surrounding area.

Every 3-6 Months

  • Clean pump strainers and filtration equipment.

  • Check for leaks in pipework, taps, and fittings.

  • Inspect pump operation and system pressure.

  • Verify correct operation of pump controls.

Annually

  • Test and service the tank-to-mains automatic changeover system.

  • Inspect all electrical connections and components.

  • Inspect the inside of your tank for sediment (sludge) build-up every 2–3 years and clean if required.

  • Check overall tank condition and water quality.

  • Arrange a professional rainwater system service.

Inspecting Your Tank for Sludge Build-up

Over time, a layer of fine sediment, commonly known as sludge, can accumulate on the bottom of your rainwater tank. While this sediment is generally harmless, excessive build-up can reduce water quality and may cause problems if it is drawn into your pump or household plumbing.

As part of your regular maintenance, inspect the inside of your tank every 2–3 years. If significant sludge has accumulated, it can be removed by:

  • Hiring a professional water tank cleaning company.
  • Siphoning it out yourself (where safe to do so).
  • Installing an automated tank cleaning system, such as a TankVac Self-Cleaning System, which continuously removes sediment from the base of the tank.

Keeping your tank free from excessive sludge helps protect your pump, maintain water quality and maximise the life of your rainwater harvesting system.
